For introduction about Ripple, go here.

We are SO excited to announce our six winners of this year!

It was a tough decision as all the groups came with potential and impactful ideas. Ripple was really touched and impressed by their efforts, compassion, willingness to learn, professional manners, and especially the thrive to help the surrounding communities and underprivileged children.

The winners will receive funding, mentorship and support from Ripple to carry out their project from June to September 2018.

1. Áo Giáp Sắt*

Location: Hà Nội, Vietnam | Facebook Page | *Translation: Iron Armor

Challenge Description

Building fire has been an increasingly critical threat in Hà Nội and Hồ Chí Minh City. However, the children are under-equipped to respond to emergency situations like that due to the lack of practice and awareness from the community, especially their school and family. That contributes to unfortunate incidents, financial roadblocks, and societal grievances.

Solution

A series of youth preparedness courses, delivered in August 2018, to help students (age of 11–16) at a chosen middle school in Hà Nội develop the skills to protect themselves and others in a fire emergency. Besides, 10–15 school teachers and their family are encouraged to participate in training workshops to provide support and guidance when needed.

2. YUU Organization (Your Unique Understanding)

Core members: Đặng Như Quỳnh — Co-Founder/ Content Director, Vũ Đức Huy — C.E.O/ Founder, Võ Thị Kiều Trang — Culinary Director, and Bùi Thị Mỹ Phương — Support Manager (not in the photo: Đinh Yến Nhi — Art Director).

YUU Organization is a youth community in Kon Tum Province that aims to support and provide education to local kids.

Challenge Description

Children from ethnic minority families in Kon Tum Province don’t have much access to educational programs that help them improve their social and life skills, self development and English.

Solution

“Smile class” educational program offered to 167 ethnic minority kids at Vinh Sơn 2 shelter from July-September 2018, organized by 36 YUU volunteers.

3. X-Generation

Location: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam | Facebook Page

Core members: Trương Bảo Ngọc — Founder, Sơn Nguyễn Tuyền and Đặng Nguyện Thiên An. They are students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.

Challenge Description

The alarming increase in child sexual abuse cases in HCM City (8–10 age-range).

Solution

Deliver an interdisciplinary educational program on sexual harassment prevention to an estimate of 300 fifth-graders at an elementary school in HCM City from July-December 2018.

4. RIFAR (Reading Is Fun And Rewarding)

Location: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam | Facebook Page

In 2017, with great support from the US Embassy, five high school students from five provinces in Vietnam — An Giang, Tây Ninh, Đồng Nai and Đà Lạt — received full scholarships to participate in the South East Asia Youth Leadership Program at the Northern Illinois University, Illinois, US. After that, they started a social project, RIFAR — Reading Is Fun And Rewarding — aiming to share and apply what they learned from the program.

Challenge Description

With the current situation of Vietnam education, students in Lâm Đồng and Nha Trang provinces have to consume overloaded information at school. The majority of them struggle with their study due to the lack of knowledge of different learning styles.

Solution

Workshops for 150 high-school students in the two provinces on July 8th and 29th, 2018. There will be lectures, learning style quiz, game activities, and exercises that help the students discover their own learning styles and understand the benefits of utilizing them.

4. Physics is Magic

Location: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam | Facebook Page

Members are students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.

Founded four years ago by a group of teacher-to-be science enthusiasts, Physics is Magic aims to ignite and nurture the love for science for kids of all ages in Hồ Chí Minh City. They have helped 12000 kids get exposed to science through playful and interactive ways — fairs, experiment classes, etc. And they want to expand the impact to out of the city.

Challenge Description

All children should have access to educational knowledge and activities. However, those who live in remote areas have limited opportunities, especially when it comes to learning about science.

Solution

“The magic ride” June 1st-3rd, 2018, a project that brings science exposure to children in 3 remote locations: orphans at the Center Charitable Bamboo Village in Đồng Nai Province, Phan Thiết School for the underprivileged and Hồng Phong Secondary school in Bắc Bình district, Bình Thuận Province.

5. The Puzzle

Location: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam | Facebook Page

Core team with kids at Ánh Sáng shelter. Members are all high school students.

Challenge Description

Orphanage/shelter and street children don't have access to sexual assault prevention programs/information and practice of self protection, which makes them extremely vulnerable to sexual exploitation.

Solution

Eight educational classes (four in 2018 and four in 2019) provided to kids at shelters in HCM City. Each class lasts about 1.5–2 hours (including ice-breaker activities, teaching and gifts giving). The goals are to help kids practice self-defense (especially in urgent situations), develop sexual abuse prevention skills, and learn how to report to the authorities.
